Benning to NCAA?

D Matt Benning, son of former NHLer D Brian Benning and a 2nd round Bantam pick of the Ice in 2009 has reportedly received an NCAA scholarship to Minnesota-Duluth, according to Gregg Drinnan at Taking Note.

Benning reported to the Ice training camp in 09 but following that decided not to return, citing the aforementioned NCAA options that have now appeared to come to fruition.

Earlier this summer Benning's rights were traded by Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth to Bob Tory and the Tri-City Americans for a conditional 3rd and 6th round picks, likely in the 2013 Draft.

Tory told me in an email following the deal that the picks were conditional on Benning reporting to the Ams, signing a WHL player contract and playing. It appears now those picks would revert back to the Americans.

Benning, a 6' 210lb rearguard, currently plays for the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL and should join UMD in 2013. With 2g and 6a in 12 games Benning is 14th among AJHL Defensemen in scoring.

Also, a note on former Ice G Brett Teskey. The Regina product is now with the Weyburn Red Wings of the Junior A SJHL.
