The WHL ruled today on the two majors assessed and the Ross knee-on-knee in game 2 Saturday night.
They are:
Brad Ross Portland Tbd under supplemental discipline versus Kootenay on May 7
Tayler Jordan Portland One game for cfb major and g.m. versus Kootenay on May 7
So, hey, sometimes I get it wrong. Ross was an easier call in hindsite; knee is stuck out and he's a three-time offender this season. But Jordan, as dangerous as it was I think the major and game misconduct was enough. I just don't think there was the intent of say, well, most know my feelings on that one.
Still think that Boychuk's was worse than Jordan's, especially given the talk on concussions and protecting the head and the like. There's no tolerance to checking to the head and yet the league chooses not to discpline this one any further. Wonder what message that is sending... But it begs the question... does the WHL have a rule 48 like the NHL?
Rule 48 is - Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.
48.2 Minor Penalty - There is no provision for a minor penalty for this rule.
48.3 Major Penalty - For a violation of this rule, a major penalty shall be assessed (see 48.4).
48.4 Game Misconduct – An automatic game misconduct penalty shall be assessed whenever a major penalty is assessed under this rule.
48.5 Match Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).
Somebody asked my definition of a blindside: To me, if you don't have the puck and you're not looking, and you're hit in the head, it's a blindside. Whether a replay shows before hand it might've seemed like he saw him coming or not, it's a blindside. Even if he has the puck the league is leaving itself behind if they're not doing everything in their power to protect the players' head.
At any rate, it's all good dialogue, well most of it. Don't get personal just because it's your team, either way - Ice or Hawks. I think it was a Portland fan that posted that this is what the internet can be all about. Generating discussion on the sport we all love. Of course the kind of the point of all this...
On the Ross suspension, I'm sure the league's waiting to see if Fraser plays Tuesday. That would be the only explanation for the delay in determining the length.
Watching the Canucks, how many are cheering for this one to end so that it doesn't conflict with Game 4? Radio had 2500 sold for both games thus far, meaning crowds of about 3000 for game three.
Game Three Tuesday at 7PM

Where are the people from the outback? This is an East Kootenay team by the name it chose. SoOOOOOO, where are the Crestons, Fernies etc. Kimberly pretty supported so won't pick on them.
Drinnans blog has a short item on sale of Memorial Cup tickets. Not going all that well by the comments in the article. Food for thought, maybe??????????
Coming in from the West Kootenays for game 3 hopefully.....can I get tickets at the gate?
Anonymous from the West Kootenays - yes, you can probably get tickets at the door, but if you want to be sure, you can phone the box office during the day and reserve your tickets that way. Better choice of seats, and there is usually no line-up at the will call window.
Coming down from Invermere... saw at least 20 from Invermere at last game.
Ticket sales were pretty low as of yesterday. I sure hope there is a deluge of ticket sales today. At least the Canucks finished off their series last night so people can't be tempted to stay home and watch Game 7 of that series. Its good to see other fans from around the Kootenays coming to the games. Let's go Cranbrook; our team needs us to pack the Plex. GO ICE GO!!
So, if you saw a train coming down the tracks and you still pulled out in front of it would you consider that to be a blindside as well...because that's basically what happened. Can't honestly expect people to buy that it was a blindside hit when the hit was clearly from the side that he had full field of vision...seriously.
Jeff,
Ross' penalty was not called a major, so there were only two majors, not three called. Ross received two for tripping on the collision with Fraser.
A journalist should get his facts straight...
I stand corrected and it's now fixed.... Oh and BTW, I've never maintained the 'journalist' tag. I'm not. This is a blog... Take it for what it's worth; to entertain, spur so some discussion, intelligent or otherwise, and kill time reading on the Ice and Dub.
I put in 50 hours a week at the mill just like many fans out there. This is just for fun.
Don't mind the corrective posts but if you're going take a shot, them at least sign it.

Boychuck should have been gone as well. Forget the blindside crap because the real issue was hitting someone in a "vulnerable position". This is what the NHL wants to take out of the game. Clearly Boychuck was head hunting. I think the fact they suspended both Ross and Jordan shows the league was convinced of Portland's gong show in game 2, and they didn't want to throw out a third guy. Ross's was a clear intent to injure, and Jordan's hit was identical to the one that paralyzed Brad Hornung. None of this could happen without the Ok from the head coach who wasn't in control of his troops.
Thje Ice were in control of the game until all the penalties which disrupted their rolling the lines. If the Ice play their game and the goaltending holds up this will be over in 5 games.
Its amazing how so many people have so many opinions on the play. Ross who received 2 seperate minor penalties, looked the innocent, it was just a collison in open ice, but it hurts the most because of injury. While Boychuck elbow only received a major after the ref said the player receved a concussion, however, was back on the ice. He should receive NO further penalty. Jordan who had the lease amount 'intent" but get the suspension. Portland is a BIG team, but not goons! The Ice are a chippy team, with their slashes on face offs and "snowing" to the goalie. THE GM for Portland said it best, when he said in 25 years of coaching he never seen anything like it. Enough said!
Theres nothing else like American hockey fans. Yes, I am going to stur this pot. Have you never seen your team in a championship final... oh wait you probably havent because you just hopped on the bandwagon last week. Lets get real here. Some of the players on these teams are playing their last career series. If you think things arent going to get chippy and emotional for both teams then you are just nieve. This is a bunch of teenagers playing the most important hockey games of their lives. Little slashes and snowing the goalie come nowhere close the gongshow that Portland displayed in game 2. That was just an embarresment to the sport and the league. Yeah the refs let it get a little out of hand but Coach Johnston didnt do much to calm his team down, and pretty much stood up for all those plays after the game. Wake up, and when you learn a little bit about hockey then come talking to me. Go ICE Go!
I had to give my head a shake. I thought for a minute I was back in the Bruins/Habs blog. See you all at the game! GO ICE GO!!
I love it when someone throws out the American's don't know hockey as well as our friends up North.
I have seen plenty of hockey both here in Portland and up north in Canada and I actually love when the games get chippy. They allow the slashing, face wash after the whistle, interference at the faceoffs. Nothing wrong with any of that if they allow both sides some slack.
The Ross and Jordan penalties were good calls. Ross is an idiot and Jordan should have just taken a different angle on the guy after he touched the puck. The problem I still have an apparently the league agrees is the call on Boychuck.
Clean hit with his body with no elbow or shoulder making contact. It sucks they guy got hit on the chin but he should also keep his head up and be responsible for his own safety.
It should be a good couple of games up there but to bad for you guys, the Hawks have more talent and are more physical than the Ice.
"Thje Ice were in control of the game until all the penalties which disrupted their rolling the lines. If the Ice play their game and the goaltending holds up this will be over in 5 games."
Which fairytale world do you live in? The ONLY way the ice wins this series is if they continue to get favorable calls from Canadian refs so you don't have to face the much more talented Hawks. But keep on dreaming all you want.
Both you guys should stick to what you think you know best. High school football.
Its always amazed me how some fans are always 100% sure their team will win. I'll bet every Blades fan thought that, too. I know better than to post something so smug. Hockey is too unpredictable with how many goal scorers there are in today's hockey. I went through this same thing in the Habs/Bruins series. The Habs fans had the Bruins done before the series even started. I'm sure they are now eating crow. My Bruins won and I did not post until all was said and done. Why don't we chill and just watch and see what happens. I myself do not enjoy crow. GO ICE GO!
@Cup Half Full Agree with you. Like all of you, I'm counting the minutes to when the puck drops tonight and got a little carried away in calling out another poster.
I have a lot of respect for what Knoblauch has done as a rookie coach. Other than 2nd period of the last game, it's been a great series so far.
Well said Hawkman. Both these teams have proven they are the best in the WHL and both deserve to be here. Knobs has done an awesome job - not only a rookie coach but the youngest coach in the WHL. Enjoy the game. GO ICE GO!!
