Ice over Pats

The Kootenay Ice used their newly found power play prowess, scoring three goals on five opportunities to beat the Regina Pats 7-4 at the Rec Plex Saturday

The Ice also gave up two goals on the PK and three straight goals in the second period to go down 4-3 before Kootenay tied it late in the frame on a goal by Matt Fraser and then Steele Boomer scored an early power play goal in the third for the eventual game-winner.

Kevin King, Joe Antilla, James Martin, Jesse Ismond and Christian Magnus got the other markers.

Kootenay is now 5-3-0-1 on the season, good for 11 points and tied for second in the Central and fourth the Eastern Conference.

Brayden McNabb missed his fourth game with a shoulder injury. Ice head coach Kris Knoblauch said that McNabb probably could play Tuesday if they needed him but they will err on the side of caution and wait until Friday when they host Red Deer.

Jared Zentner, Ryan Bloom and Elgin Pearce were the other scratches, all healthy. The latter of which it seems the coach is clearly trying to send a message.

Knoblauch also mentioned that the club will get down to the 22-man roster and make their final decision on which two of the four forwards - Ryan Bloom, Jared Zentner, Erik Benoit and Adam Rossignol, all 17 - the team will keep. The latter two of which are my picks, if anyone's asking.

I'm told that G Todd Mathews has garnered some interest from his old Junior A club in Saskatchewan, Notre Dame, as well as many USHL calls but also the Barrie Colts of the OHL are also keenly interested.

Griffen Reinhart and the Edmonton Oil Kings are here Tuesday.

The Blog is going to be kind of quiet for the next week as I'm off to Pittsburgh for work commitments. If anything earth-shattering happens I'll post from afar.

Benoit third line Wow! If I was Montgomery, Pearce or Hurley-I would be asking out, I'm sure their confidence will be at a all time low. Too Bad-all would get a better opportunity somewhere else.

We finally gave Magnus a shot and he definitely could be top six right now.

The Mj game was lost by the top two lines not the bottom two but we only ever juggle or sit out the bottom two lines-not sure what incentive there is for the top two lines to work hard if you are going to get ice time anyway.

I think Magnus and Ismond deserves a shot on the top two lines and Montgomery, Hurley and Pearce
at third-make everybody earn their ice time.

All of the really good teams out there have a equal blend of seasoned Vets and younger players.

Red Deer, Saskatoon, Portland, PG etc.

Remember what I said last year-If you burn your aces out by August-you will have a quick exit in October. That's exactly what happened-gone in the first round. I'm afraid the picture looks identical for this year. The big picture should be winning it all-not just making the playoffs for the 50th straight year-at the end of the day nobody cares you made the playoffs (season tickets down to a new low) we care about winning in the playoffs.
I want the excitement that the town felt back 2000-2002.

Reggie III-No need for a rebuttal-just a duo season ticket holder making a statement.

Can you at least come up with a fake name to post as?

You are right! It didn't work for Brandon but it certainly worked for Windsor, that seems to be the modern template to follow.

so we win a game 7 to 4 and you(anonymous #1) want to change a bunch of lines and juggels shit up to get ismond on Christian "the Softie" Magnus more ice time? are you frigging kidding me?

Ismond yes, the kid has some skill but not enough consistency to kick anyone else from a top 6 spot. But Magnus? really man? the kid is a wussy. A total soft hearted no grit wussy. I dont get how he can play at this level. I would rather have zentner stay in his place, at least he brings something to the table.

As far as Im concerned, give him ice time, get him some numbers, and trade him and Rintoul for a top scorer like Carter Ashton last night.

That would put thi steam over the cusp, only question is goaltending. I would serioulsy address that too, Bring in a true number 1 guy for Lieuwen. I have no faith in is injury prone wussyness either. He has a lot to prove to me to find trust in his ability to carry us deep.

Elgin Pearce has been injured since the exhibition season and the team Doctor will not let him play.

I hope you are right about pearce because I don't think there is any way he should be a healthy scratch. And I totally agree with Mike from Canmore about Magnus, but I think Ismond deserves to be a top 6 guy.

If Pearce is injured they sure have a funny way of showing it. He's got into seven games since the exhibition season ended and played Thursday in Moose Jaw. Knoblauch clearly indicated he was sending a message to Pearce.

As for the comments, I like the debate but keep them clean and lighten up on the name-calling (Wussy). You can make your points without them.

Mike from Canmore, you really do epitomize the image represented by the Mike from Canmore on Air Farce. Do you follow hockey at all?? Trade for Ashton? Are you friggin kidding me. What has Ashton done for the Pats so far(he won't replace Eberle). If your going trade for a scorer, trade for one that can score. As far as Magnus, sure he is not a physical player, but the kid has only now been given some real ice time this year. Players like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky were all considered "softie" players as well during their junior careers. Funny how the wussy players all go first round in the draft. A team of goons won't get you to the cup but finesse players will. I am not saying Magnus is in that same league of players, however how many fights do these players ever get into.
BTW, what WHL team do you play for??

Mike from Canmore said...

sounds like youre comparing them to me Mr.anonymous, by the way if you want to call people out for how smart they are, where is your opinion on things to happen and what WHL team do you play for Mr or Mrs Magnus?

Carter Ashton is pure energy and any team would want him on their roster.

Funny Jeff you say to keep it clean and light but these are interesting discussions and point of views only. Possibly you should give this same advice to the commentators... After listening to Kootenay VS Regina I have never heard more negative comments said during a game about their supposedly "home team". Possibly they should listen to other commentators, their manners and comments....Maybe they will change their tune too!

First of all, I'm done hiding behind a fake name, no need for one here I guess. If you can't beat em, join them. If this was my blog every anonymous post would be deleted but its not and they're not.

Second, I would welcome a trade for Carther Ashton any day of the month. Could you imagine Ashton and Czerwonka crashing the net together? He may be no Eberle but no hockey minded being expects him to.

And yes, players like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky were all considered "softie" players as well during their junior careers, but when they were in juniors, they weren't afraid to put the puck in the net. They were drafted in the first round because of the there offensive ability (for those of you who didn't know this) Magnus isn't that great offensively, if he was he would have recieved the ice time. In his role (since he can't put up great offensive numbers), there should be a little (lot) more grit to his game. He ain't gonna get drafted (let alone in the first round) doing what he does.

Yeah, I agree Hollick and Watson are very negative. I hardly ever bring my radio to the game anymore. They have about two players each that can do no wrong-everyone else can do no right. They continueously praise the other team-I tune in to hear about our players.

It's funny how they critize one kid for something but if its one of their great kids doing the same thing-you can here the silence.

I'm sure Watson must have been a great hockey in his day!He sure is critical of the Ice player and coaches.Maybe he thought he should have been the next coach.Hard to listen to him without wanting to smack him!
