The Score - Broncos - Ice

THE SCORE – Broncos 1 – Kootenay 0

WHAT HAPPENED – Kootenay ran into a hot goaltender in Travis Yonkman who was solid all night and when he wasn’t Kootenay hit the post, glass, boards, crowd anything but the net.
THE LINE – Arnaud Jacqumet, Dustin Sylvester and Steele Boomer were Kootenay’s best line all night, giving the Broncos fits and generating at least ten scoring chances. Unfortunately none of them found the back of the net and the unthinkable happened on Teddy-Bear Toss night. Using the anti-climatic third period buzzer some 2000 stuffed animals rained down onto the ice.
THE (ONLY) GOAL – With Bronco forward Dale Wiese in the box for interference Ice D-man Chad Greenan went low looking for the back-door pass that backfired. The pass missed Greenan and careened off the boards to a streaking Zak Smith and a 2-on-1. Erik Felde picked the pass up from Smith at the Ice blueline – Felde looked like he put himself offside in the process – and fired the puck past Lazaruk five-hole. It was Larazuk’s only blemish as the 19-year-old kept the Ice in the game for the first half of the first period and most of the third.

THE (NON) GOAL – Bronco forward Dale Wiese wired a wrist shot past Kris Lazaruk early in the third period giving the Broncos what appeared to be a 2-0 lead. Referee Cory McLean had signalled a delayed checking-from-behind call on Michael Stickland and the Broncos fished the puck out of the corner and fed Wiese. McLean said an Ice player touched the puck and waved off the goal. Kootenay got lucky because no Ice player had possession.

THE INJURIES – Ben Maxwell (thigh – indefinite) still isn’t skating and is hopeful for a New Year return. D Jordan Wilkins is day-to-day with a knee injury while LW Kevin King stopped skating on his knee on the advice of doctors, wanting to give it time to heal. Contrary to prior reports King’s surgery won’t be for a sports hernia. The 17-year-old took a high-stick in last year’s playoffs to the neck and will need minor glandular surgery to clean it up. It remains to be seen how long the Ice can keep pace without top-six forwards Maxwell, King and Jacquemet, who will leave for the Czech Republic to play for Switzerland at the World Junior Championships.

THE STREAKS – Are stopped. Da Silva’s 15-game point streak along with John Negrin (eight games with an assist) and Andrew Bailey (seven games) all have their strings stopped.

THE CHANCE – RW Andrew Bailey, pictured above with the puck on his stick and an open net in which to put it in, fired the puck over the net an emerging theme on the night.

THE CROWD - Small, for Teddy Bear night, at 2838 one of the smaller crowds of the year.

THE REC PLEX THREE STARS

1. G Travis Yonkman – Stellar when he had to be.

2. LW Steele Boomer – The whole line could’ve been a star, they dominated most of the night.

3. G Kris Lazaruk – Kept the Ice in the game.
Bronco forward Erik Felde, a super-speedster, should get an honourable mention.

UP NEXT - The Red Deer Rebels are at the ‘Plex Saturday night.
