The Score – Kootenay 5 – Portland 0
What Happened? – Kootenay dominated from the opening face-off and never let up. Rookie goaltender Mark Guggenbergen was thrown to the wolves by his teammates early and could only bail them out so many times.
The Goals – Both Steve Da Silva and Andew Bailey have finally rounded into form as Da Silva potted his 10th and 11th goals on the season and Bailey – he of the – 7 on the season - notched his 5th and 6th of the season and more importantly, was a +2 on the night and on the ice for four of the club’s five goals.
The Points – The weekend wins over Calgary and Portland give the Ice 20 points and a 9-10-2 record. After a lacklustre start suddenly this club is in the thick of things in the Central Division.
The Injuries – Add another into sick bay as newly acquired forward Jason MacDonald suffered a concussion in the win over Calgary Friday. Maxwell is still out indefinitely; Sylvester should play Friday against Everett and MacDonald could return for the weekend. As for the rookie goaltender Nathan Lieuwen, he suffered a setback in practice this week and even if he was ready likely wouldn’t play against U.S. Division powerhouses Everett and Seattle who are at the ‘Plex this weekend.
The Melee – Down 5-0 late in the game Winterhawk import forward Viktor Sjodin dangerously checked Ice d-man Jiri Ryzuk into the end boards. Ryzuk went in head-first and groggily got back to his feet and skated off under his power. A mini-line brawl broke out with Portland D Scott Grabriel and Ice F/D Jordan Wilkins headlining. Gabriel scored the take-down over Wilkins in a fight-filled game that had a lot of fights but little intensity.
The Rookie – D Braydon McNabb played his best game of the year and even saw some power play time. The big blueliner is getting more and more confident with every shift and on this night there were a lot of them.
The Crowd – 2748, though I’d be surprised if there were 2100 in actual attendance.
The Skinny – It was Portland, which could be easily confused with a major midget squad, so not a lot was expected of the lowly Winterhawks but two points is two points and the Ice treated it as such.
Rec Plex Three Stars
1. Andrew Bailey – Four points and a much-needed scoring burst.
2. Steve Da Silva – Four points and a much-needed scoring burst.
3. Thomas Heemskerk – The Rookie’s first shutout and probably his easiest win in the WHL so far
Next up is the Kyle Beach and the Everett Silvertips Friday at the 'Plex. Tried to find footage of Beach's behind the net goal in Edmonton against the Oil Kings but to no avail. It's the Silvertips only visit here this season and Beach is usually worth the price of admission alone. Everett is here Friday.
